  • "Clean Your Props"

What do you guys use to clean your props?

What's the best way to clean your props up before dropping the boat back in after a long Winters Nap?

Inboard engines. Shafts and Props are in good shape. just want to clean everything up and get a nice shine on the props..

    Thanks

    Ding 'em

Only kidding but my approach unforetunately seems to be to ding them and send them out for reconditioning. They alway come back shiney after that; too bad is costs so much for the shine

I have heard that muriatic acid works well, I myself use 220 grit paper on the shafts & have the props balanced & polished by a prop shop.

Takes me 2 hours to restore like new

Go to the paint department or tool department at Home Depot and buy three of the hard plastic wheels that insert into a power drill. They are about 1/2 inch in width and 4 inches in diameter. They are less abrasive than metal wheels and will take everything off of your shafts and props....you don't even need to take your props off. Since they are plastic, you will chew them up so buy a few of them at $5 a piece.

You'll never pick up a piece of sand paper or hand scrape metal again.

3M makes one called "Paint & Rust Stripper". Norton makes one called "Rapid Strip"...."strips away rust, corrosion, scale, paint, and epoxy" Their is a website on that packaging.....www.nortonabrasives.com....maybe you can see a pic of one there.

                  props

Takes 5 minutes, paint on muriatic acid and watch calcuim dissolve in seconds, no elbow grease needed, just wear gloves.

I don't know if you have the same problems with marine growth in Hawaii that we have in the northeast....I wonder if this acid will take off a season of marine growth.

                      props

water temp 80 year round, probably more of an issue here and boat is in the water 12-18 months at a time.

Anybody using prop speed or barnacle block? How are your results. I painted my props and shafts with the Petit version of barnacle block for the first time this season.
