  • Volvo D6 - 310HP??

Finally, a 28 is on order with Yanmar 315HP engines. I have the option to change to Volvo's new Common Rail D6's within the next few weeks. Just wanted to know if anyone has any experence with these D6 engines?
I have been to BoatDiesel's site, but very little info on them there.
    Thank you....Jim

    Yanmars

As far as I know Yanmars have been essentially trouble free, can't say that about any other brand. What bothers me is when they reach their life expectancy of 2500-3000 hrs or so(from what I hear), what happens next? They are sleeveless aluminum blocks, are they rebuildable or throw aways? I am no diesel expert but if 3000 hrs or even 3500hrs is the lifespan, I rather have the Volvos. I've seen 5k or more on these engines and they are rebuildable.

        Yanmar v. Volvo

I had a 315 yanmar boat for two years and just purchased a volvo D-6 boat. I have only run the new boat one time, but I can tell you that the new common rail engines are unbelievable. No smoke, less noise, and almost no turbo lag. Yanmars are great engines, but with the new technology I think the volvo D-6 is a better engine. I'll post if I have any problems this season with the volvos.

i have 365 hrs. on my D-6's. no issues at all. i made my decision based on torque curve charts and that volvo's are all cast iron. yanmars have alum. heads. 0 smoke and no noticable turbo lag.

            Split decision on new 28

Have opportunity to trade my 25 Yanmar 06 for a 07 28. Looking for advice as my Yanmar was replaced at 265hrs. My marina is a Volvo distributer and would like to hear performance and feed back on these options. Yanmar 315s vs. Volvo D6.

              Look closely at D4-260's also

talk with Mac about the differences in performance between the D4-260 and the D6-310 versus the ease of maintenance w/ the smaller D4's.

I have D4-260's; have honest full load cruise at 3050 RPM of 25-26 knots; hit 33 and change at WOT.

I only burn 20 GPH w/ the D4's at 25-26 knots which is better economy than you will get w/ the larger D6's.

On the flip side I have to run at 86% load ( 3050 RPM) to get 25-26 knots while a D4 can probably get the same fully loaded 25-26 knots with 200 less RPM's...

my D6's run 25 kts at 2500 rpm's. volvo's reach max torque at a much lower rpm than yanmar's, that plus your marina is a volvo dist. would solve it for me.

I got my new 28CC last summer with the volvo 310 . the boat runs great.it has a cruise of 30k and a top of 34k.It comes out of the hole like a ski boat! The engines are very quiet. This is my second 28 CC my last boat had cumming 250 and this boat blows it away. The fuel consumption is very good and the computer gauge for the engine gives quite a bit of information.I think you cant go wrong with the volvo
