  • 1998 Volvo 7.4 GI surging and an oil leak

Hello everyone. We are having a problem with our 7.4. When I first start the boat, the rpms surge up an down and wont seem to even out. After I get going the engine runs great, although after leaving a fishing spot and heading to another as she was coming up on plane, the motor started stumbling. I backed her down to idle and tried again. That only happened once. After that, Everything was good. I also noticed gas smoke (for lack of a better term) at idle. Smells like she is running very rich. Last time out, after idling down, she stalled, but she started right back up. I replaced the cap, rotor, and plugs but that didnt seem to help. Any suggestions??? Also noticed a developing oil leak around the front of the motor. It seems to be leaking and running down, because it is damp around the belt tensioners and on some of the hoses. It is a new boat to us, and Im not sure how long the fuel has been in the tanks. Im thinking at least over the past winter. I put some fuel additives in and that didnt seem to help. Thanks everone.

It is fuel injected. I also forgot to mention that I cleaned out the throttle body unit and that didnt help either. Thanks

Split Decision, I noticed that you are from NJ. Who do you use for mechanic work that is familiar with the Classic boats. Our boat is kept in Margate.

I don't know enough about injected engines to help you out but talk to this guy at " ENGINES 1 " in the carolinas. Not sure which one. He is a wealth of knowledge on that stuff and can fix you up with parts at the best price. I found this place when I owned a Shamrock and they are the best. Helped me out a few times.

The only mechanic that I use is a Cummins mechanic out of Bristol PA. He happens to have the area that I keep the boat. He is very good with the new QSBs. Originally I had a different mechanic but he was clueless with the commonrail engines.

All the work not engine related I do myself.
