  • To Buy or Not To Buy Extended Warranty?

    Gentlemen:

I've got D4 260 Volvos that are 05 models with about 40 hours on each. The boat is a 28CC that was a demo and sold as new to me in May 07. I've never had any experience with inboards in a saltwater environment. I don't have a firm cost of the extended warranty but I think it is about $3000 per engine for a 5 year warranty.

    Do you have any recommendations?

    Randy

I would get it if I were you. Chances are that you won't have any trouble, but if you do, Volvo engines can get mighty expensive to work on. I tell you that from experience.

Even under the extended warranty, not everything is covered. To protect yourself, require to see what is covered and what is not covered in WRITING. Just so you know what you are getting.

        Engine Warranties

I own Volvo also D6 engine and I was going to buy the extended warranties but opted not to when I found out what exclusions they come with, they really do not cover much for the money.
I also think if you talk to them they will lower the price of the extended warranties. They started out at $55000.00 and I got them down to $ 4,000.00 for both engines. I was going to get them until I found out that my repair shop will not take the coverage direct from them. I was told that I have to pay for the repairs first and then mail them the bill and they will reinburse me the money. I did not like that deal.

          ext waranty

I got the waranty on 05 260 D4's(600 hours now). It is true you can bargain with them. It is also true certain parts are not covered. What is covered is worth it if something goes wrong. For example under waranty volvo replaced all of my computers around 12,000$. THese electronic items are very costly and definitely covered..worth the piece of mind right there for me. The current waranty only lasts 2 years and mine will be obsolete in 4 months. Now I am good till 20011. The major expensive engine parts are covered most of not covered stuff is filter/hose small cost items that are easily exposed to wear and tear. All these waranties are not the same from what I understand so do your homework first. Travel time and haul out are not covered on mine and there is a 250$ deductible but this is covered simply by the travel time to and from my boat and the rest of waranty time is covered. Good luck and hold out for the best deal possible, the give discounts for twins and straight inboards.

            Volvo Entended Warranty

I reconsidered the idea of not buying the Extended Warranty for my boat, after thinking about not having any warranty on the motors I called volvo and talked to the guy whose was selling the warrany and decided to purchase the extended warranty. I was able to bargain with them and and that made up my mind to get the warranty. I hope I never have to use it but the peace of mind knowing that I do have a warranty is worth the price of the warranty it self. They do cover all electronis gauges and after reading the post where the gentleman had to have all his evc gauges replaced and they were covered made me think the price of the warranty is not such a bad deal after all. I beleive that the coverage is 3 years, so I am now good till 2010.

I just wanted to say thanks for your responses to my thread on this subject, without your replys I would have passed up the chance to purchase the extended warranty.

              Make sure you

guys read what is NOT covered. And talking to the guys who sell the warranty tells you almost nothing. If you ever need the warranty you will be talking to someone else who has a whole different demeanor. You will not be talking to VP at that point. You will basically be talking to a guy who works hard not to cover your claim.

Here is an example I learned about. The compressors on the KAMD300's are not covered. Turbos are but not compressors. Why?.... I asked and got no answer.

They know their compressors are a weak link

I've read the warranty book at least a few times and can't get an understanding of what is covered and what isn't. Designed that way? I think so.
