  • Volvo D4 Fuel Consumption

My 2005 CC28 has D4's and they have about 50 hours on them. Depending upon speed, one engine uses about 1/2 to 3/4 gal per hour more than the other at the same RPM according to the EVC computer guages. Is this common or is this an issue that needs to be addressed by me or Volvo? I just bought the boat (as new) and have only put about 15 hours on it myself.

I have a 2007 D4's in a 28 with about 60 hours and I am experiencing the exact same thing. Keith told me that it's not unusual. The sensors may be calibrated slightly differently. I thought it may have to do with direction and current at first, but one seems to be about 1/2 to 3/4 GPH less at all times.

Unless someone's found something specific, I wouldn't worry about it. My boat tracks correctly in all sea conditions, and the props are in good shape so I guess it's just the senders.

        I ignore the GPH readings

and if I really care enough; look at the graphs which remove the momentary fluctuations. I look closely at the burn per engine between fills which invariably is w/in 2% and is close enough for me.

          Gph

Also keep in mind that one motor is pushing through a reverse reduction gear which will increase load and fuel burn slightly on that side . . .

            fuel burn

I have the same 05 setup and the same discrepancy. I was told from Volvo that one engine is the lead and the other follows, also calibration and these EVC units are not failsafe and they are not flow scans. Just use the info as an approximation. Rob

Also remember, the gear running in reverse does not run exactly the same ratio. One runs at 2.017 and the other at 2.037. Not enough to notice but it may make a little difference in the fuel.

                  Not sure any more

On my last trip (194 gallons burned); one gauge read 3 gallons higher than the opther ( 89.x to 86.x) after the trip. Uusally they are within 1/2 gallon of each other. I hit a shark on the way out, and for the 1st time noticed the 1/2 to 3/4 gallon discrepency; perhaps because I was looking for it.

However; I did notice a 60 RPM difference doing a WOT run after the trip.

I'm doing another 200 miler tomorrow, will track and watch carefully. If there is a discrpency I will have the boat hauled and the prop's swapped; then report.
