    Norm ,

I have 2001 25 with a Yanmar 300 and Bravo III, with about 750 Hrs.When the boat was pulled for the season last month they found burnt gear oil and metal in the outdrive. Looks like I'm in need of a rebuild or new outdrive.I was wondering what exactly happened to yours, and if you rebuilt or replaced with a new one.

YOU HAVE THE SAME SET UP THAT WE DO!!!!! WE LOVED THE YANMAR, NOT SURE WHY MORE ARE NOT USEING THAT ENGINE???? THE BROVO~III HAD A BAD SEAL SET UP, I WAS TOLD BY A BUDDY A YEAR AFTER WE GOT OUR BOAT!!!!! WHAT HAPPENS IS AFTER YOU USE THE BOAT , COME BACK TO THE DOCK, IF YOU LEAVE THE BOAT AT THE DOCK & ARE NOT LOADING ON TO THE TRAILER,AS THE UNIT COOLS OFF IT SUCKS A LITTLE SALT WATER IN THE UNIT!!!!! I DO ALL MY OWN WORK ,AS WE HAVE A TRUCKING COMPANY & I KNOW A LOT ABOUT MAKING THINKS WORK!!!!I CHANGED THE OIL IN THE UNIT BY THE BOOK & THIS DID NOT HELP AT ALL!!!! WE HAVE A VERY GOOD MERC DEALER THAT WE WORK WITH , HE IS A BUDDY OF MINE, SO WE TRUST HIM...WHEN HE PULLED THE UNIT DOWN, WE FOUND ALL THE BEARING WERE BAD FROM THE SALT WATER,THE GEARS WERE STILL GOOD FOR BABY 7-900 MOR HOURS!!!! BUT AFTER MORE LOOKING WE ORDERD THE NEW 2005 BRUVO-III, THIS HAS ALL THE NEW TYPE SEALS THAT WERE MADE TO FIX THE OLD PROBLEM~~~~BUT WE HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO USE IT YET<THIS WILL COME OUT IN A NEW POST>
IF YOU NEED ANY PARTS FOR YOUR UNIT<GOOD GUY>YOU CAN HAVE MY OLD UNIT FREE~~ YOU PAY THE SHIPPING!!!! THE NEW UNIT COST ABOUT $8.5000, TO FIX YOUR OLD UNIT IS NEAR $2-3000 THIS IS DEPENDING OF YOUR DEALER -OR WHO WILL BE MAKING THE REPAIRES!!! THIS IS THE MAIN REASON THAT WE ARE SELLING OUR 2000 CAROLINA & BULIDING A 2006 / WITH THE NEW INBOARD~~ MAC WILL NOT MAKE ANY MORE CAROLINAS WITH A OUT BOARD~`WAY TO MUCH TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!
      HOPE THIS WILL HELP~~NORM

        Norm,

Thanks for the info, I'm hoping to get it opened up this month to take alook at what going on in there, after that I will make a decision to rebuild or buy new. The Yanmar has been great I would definatly go with that engine again. Also wondering what your performance specs. are , mine seem a little low full fuel three guys ,tuna gear 3300 rpm 24 kt burning 12.5 to 13 gallons per hour . Top speed 29kt are you similar ?

I had the same setup on a 2001, at 260 hrs. brought the boat in for valve adgustment,''Al Grovers in Long Island NY'', and told him I couldn't spin full rpm,he pulled the outdrive off and low and behold I was missing a bearing on the inside, just vanished or was never there from the factory.I had no vibration, no nothing, just couldn't spin full rpm, he and I was suprised it lasted that long one a nd a half seasons.Well after that experiance I traded the boat in and jumped into a new 04 28 with the volvo 300 diesels never more happy.Merc made good for the outdrive even though my warrenty had expired by a few months, but it cost me for the labor.Merc had a lot of issues with that bravo 3, I can see why Mac discontinued using them

I have a 2001 with the 315 Yanmar, 6LP block. Which block are you guys running?

The outdrive is a Bravo IIIX. The original outdrive didn't make 200 hours before the diesel ate it up and the previous owner replaced it with the X. Which outdrive are you guys running? So far I have had to replace a gimbal bearing due to a leaking boot, and the intermediaye shift cable. Other than that the drive has been good.

Sorry to hear of your outdrive woes, but glad to hear it was a III and not a IIX. How about you other guys?

                  Graceland,

My boat has the 6LP- STE with the Bravo III diesel outdrive . I've replaced the shifting plate and shifting cable .I'm hoping when I get the outdrive repaired my performance will pick up.Wondering what your performace numbers are. I've seen your boat when it was in CT. nice boat.

I cruise at 3400 rpm, getting 28 knots (32.5 mph) and burning 11 gph (2.9 mpg). Max is 3850 rpm, 34 knots (39 mph) burning 17 gph (2.3 mpg). Best fuel economy is 3200 rpm @ 26 knots getting 3.12 mpg.

Your numbers look a little low to me. Is yours a 300 or 315 hp? I am turning a 24P Duo prop that has had some cup added to it to get the slip down to about 8%.

                      Graceland,

My boat is listed 300 HP I"m not sure why some are listed as 300 and others 315 I've been told that they just rerated the engines. My props are Merc 15 3/4x22 14 1/4x22 . I,m about three kts below specs.for the RPM my fuel burn is taken from Flo-Scan and was wonder if yours was to or if it was taken off the chart provided from CC.Are your numbers are for full fuel , full gear, and three people?
                      Thanks Setter

3/4 fuel, 4 people, 200 lbs of ice and offshore gear, no water. Floscan. What's the chart from Carolina you're talking about? From the numbers you listed it looks like you're turning a 22 prop?

                          Graceland,

Carolina provides a performance chart with each boat providing speed and fuel consumpution at a given RPM ,your boat is exactly as the chart says. Thanks for the info.

That's interesting. I talked too another guy up north who had the same set up as mine plus he put in an exhaust gas temp sensor so he could see where the engine had really loaded up. His numbers and mine were very close. He was the only one I had come across before you two on here that had the Yanmar set ups.

Did you look at mine when the broker had it last year? I added a remote spotlight and the helm cooler, other than that I haven't really done much to her other than fish the tar out of it.

                              Graceland,
I have the boost preasure and exhaust temp guage too. I saw your boat in Norwalk, while I was passing through Cove marina and had a look at it ,I was especially interested in it as it had the same Yanmar as mine.
