  • NY sales tax

Has anyone in NY purchased a boat from out of state w/ cash + a trade in and NOT had to pay the NY sales tax on the full purchase price (cash + trade)? I am being told by the out of state dealer that the NY sales tax payable at time of registration is on the cash portion of price only, though the registration forms say otherwise. Anyone have any different experience with the NY DMV in avoiding this trap? Thanks.

Tax paid on cash only, just make sure your trade is shown properly.

Thanks Chris - what concerns me is the NY form, which explicitly includes the trade value in the calculation of the purchase price on which the tax is paid. I have a personal horror story from the MA DMV in a similar situation with a car so don't want to trip up on this issue.
