  • CC 28 stowage under v birth

Tried this by adding it to another thread. No luck - so trying it again alone.

Anyone with a CC28 come up with a way to secure gear stowed under your v birth so it won't slide out while running?

Steve, I know the problem and have been hoping someone would provide an answer!

I can't recall exactly how the 28 is laid out. On my 25, I'm considering a section of cargo type netting vertically across the opening underneath the removable section of the V berth to keep things from sliding back into the opening at the base of the companionway steps. When trolling this normally isn't a problem but when it gets sloppy or sometimes when I throttle up things end up where I don't want them.

I'm thinking 4 small stainless eye bolts mounted to hold the netting. I'm pretty sure I have access thru the V berth storage compartments to get to nuts & washers with a wrench (at least for the upper ones).

Another idea would be to have a removable piece of starboard (or wood) that you could drop between a couple thin strips of starboard that form a slot on either side of the area. This might rattle around a little underway unless you really fit it together good.

Now that I think of it, I like this solution better because I don't have to worry about scraping my leg on the eyebolts when I need to go below and the boat is bouncing around in the waves. Also don't have to worry about the possible inaccessibility for backing the lower eyebolts in the first solution.

I made a similar compartment using U channel aluminum and plywood for my duck boat that works well. It separates my puddlers from my divers. It's not removable because it also provides extra support the dog platform I fabricated for the bow. I'll post a pic if I get a chance later.

      Sounds like a project

I keep a cooler under that area and to keep it from sliding out I installed a teak "galley rail". A piece of 4/4 teak ripped to 1" high, cut to length, routed eased edges, screwed in place and plugged the screws. It looks like it came from CC that way. I also added these same pieces in the head and at the galley C-top, they are very functional & look good.

            Thanks

Thanks for the feedback guys. I found an incredibly impractical solution. I now store my life raft (Zodiac SY6 Coastal in a valise package) under the v Birth. It sits upright, running across the v birth storage area (under where the table would be) and the top of the raft just happens to fit in between the wood strips that provide support to the aft most cushion. The raft can't tip over and nothing stored fwd of it can slide out any more.

              Chris,

Can you snap a picture of your "galley rail" and post it up?

Not sure what it's called, but you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy that anti skid material that you put under indoor rugs so they don't slid across your hardwood floors.

We use it for the coolers and in that area and it's a cheep way to prevent that stuff from sliding around..

Bringin back an oldie, does anyone have any further solutions to gear sliding all over the place? I would love to see some pics, I hate it when my backup beer slides out from under there!

I installed two stainless eyes on each side and then stretched two bungee cords with hooks across the opening. Works well.

I made a drop in teak board for Bullish last year. He did post a pic when he installed it. Maybe you could search his posts or he will post up again

I don't have photo's at the moment, but I used a pair of seasuckers on either side and stretched some Bungee Cords to stop plastic storage boxes and bags from sliding around.
I use a few seasuckers on my boat, for Epirb, fire extinguisher and drink holders etc. saves drilling and permanently fixing items to boat.

                        keep smiling

Haven't done anything on my 25 yet but have been considering it. Thinking rather than eye bolts, use the small stainless eyelets like the bungees for the lower end of the rear curtains clip to, they're also used for clipping off a bungee halyard for outriggers, they're a lot more low profile and have smoother transitions than eye bolts so they wouldn't tend to jump out and get you when your moving around in that area when the cargo net or bungees are removed.
