  • CC28 handling vs other twins

I'm toying with the idea of moving up and looking for opinions. For those of you who have owned and run other twin engine boats and a CC28, how would you compare them. My main concern having never handled a twin engine boat is around the docks. Is the CC28 any better or worse than other twin setups? I understand twins are easier than a single i/o.

I think the 28 handles great in and around the docks. Using the twins she spins on a dime and is very responsive to foward and reverse changes. Of course thats assuming both engines are running. We've come in on one several times and that is a completely different story..

I can't speak about other twins. This is my first. But she is much more responsive than any of the single screw inboards I've had. Spins much easier than I thought would be the case.

        dock alone/ 20 knot winds

I cn dock my 28 alone in a side dock w./ 20 knot winds from any direction. You can spin the boat on a dime and give back change.

I never use the rudders, simply gears and a touch of throttle when needed.

Our CC28 is powered by a pair of Volvo KAMD 300A's with single electronic binnacle controls (single controls for direction and throttle). As others have said, she can pivot in her own footprint with ease.

The beam on the 28 is 10.5 feet and the width of my slip is 12 foot.

                dockside handling

The key is motor spacing and prop bite. Two diesels spaced pretty far apart swinging big wheels will make docking a breeze. I have had the following boats: 23' Sea Craft - Twin Outboards...handled horribly in close quarters, 24 Albie, single i/o decent handling, 36 Hatteras...very nice in space, 26 Bertram straight inboard...would park in front of 100 people and never break a sweat...28 Classic...easy as pie. Have run these more than ten times apiece: 38' Bertram Wide Body Ray Hunt...easiest by far to dock - could put it in 39 foot space, 50' Viking...better to dock than Sea Craft and Albie..but cant see the dock from the flybridge..and 36' Contender w/275 Verados...suprisingly easy with full power steering.
