  • Generator on a 28?

I finally put a deposit on a '03 28 Friday. Been without a boat for a decade so when my wife started talking about getting back on the water I didn't need any more motivation. We are doing the survey tomorrow and then a few items need to be installed. I'm on the fence about a generator. I expect we will be on the boat early in the spring and late in the fall. Mostly on the Chesapeake, and we will probably spend some time overnight on the hook. Would be nice to run AC or heat when we are not in a slip, but the refit is pretty expensive. The dealer ( Anchor in Annapolis) hasn't given me a price yet but said there may be other options besides the factory setup. I guess I'd like to hear from someone who has the gennie installed. Does it work well and do you actually use it?

BTW, great community here! I'm an old shamrock owner. I was happy with that boat and Albemarle, but the pride here convniced me. I'll fill in the details when the registration is in my hands!

I use a honda 2000i portable generator when I run to the canyon and it does the same job and alot cheaper. When this generator goes I will be another one and still be ahead of the game.

      Generator

If the boat does not have a generator, the honda 2000i is a great way to have generator power when you need it. You might also want to consider that putting a generator in the engine room really makes servicing the engines more difficult. I've had two 28's without generators and I think the honda 2000i is the way to go on your 2003 if it does not already have a generator.

Will the 2000i run the AC and do you just connect it to the shore power outlet.

Thats is correct I bought the adapter so I can plug it in, I run all my lights, my battery charger, AC the only thing that I try not to use or use little as possible is my microwave I also have 2 big halogen lights that draw alot of juice so I only turn them on only when I am hoooked up but the 2 little ones on the tower stay on all night and so does the underwater lights. The honda generator is well worth it. I leave it on my boat all year it fits nice in the bathroom.

Same as Reel Addiction and the others. I got the honda 2000 for $1,000 two years ago. I recall the generator option being about an extra $7,000 from CC.

I always figured it was one more thing to service and break too.

For heat, you could always bring an elcectronic heater plugged into a cabin outlet as long as your portable genny is plugged into the shore power.

Thanks all. I was thinking the little honda might be a good alternative!
