  • Cape Cod to NJ

So I found a new ride (32) and have to run it from cape cod to NJ Sunday to Monday. I was planning on staying in New Haven Sunday night, but that’s just from looking at the charts. Anyone out there with a good itinerary?

I hope you have calm seas and no problems. I don't have any advice on your route, but I do have fond memories of running my boat back to NJ from Mystic Ct. when I bought my boat in April of 2013. That was the first time I ever ran the LI Sound and it it was a great trip. I can't wait to see picture of the new ride.

Where in NJ are you heading? I would recommend looking at Branford or Clinton instead of New Haven, much nicer places. The Sound is a nice easy ride, just make sure you time the tide for Hells Gate.

Port Jefferson NY is on the south side of Long Island Sound slightly west of New Haven, nice harbor with township moorings and launch service ( not sure of launch service hours off-season).
Danforts Hotel/Marina is also available, but a little pricey. Also there’s a half dozen other restaurants within two blocks.
Port Jeff has a large car& truck ferry running between Bridgeport Ct & Long Island, so there’s lots of action coming and going.

As for Hells Gate, I’ve been through dozens of times, never had any issues other then pushing against strong currents.

          Good luck.

Waiting for the right tide at Hell's Gate is for sailboats and trawlers. I passed through there at 23 kts. and the current makes little difference.

Good luck with the trip. If you are coming through Long Island let me know I can probably answer any questions. I run out to montauk a bunch and if you take the bay back west there are a couple tricky spots.

Hey just looked at that route. I would try to run cape cod to Newport. Newport to montauk then you could run montauk to shark river in probably 6 hours.

Back in NJ, we did stop for a late lunch at those grease trucks that you see from 95 in New Haven, that was a wild scene.

Nothing builds confidence in your new ride than a couple of hundred mile trip to get her home. We are all dying to see come pictures.

Looks nice. How is the cabin compared to the 28?
