  • Diesel Fuel for 2007

There has been some chatter over the last year about changes to Diesel Fuel....I think. Is there anything that we need to do differently with regard to fuel additives, etc this year?

I have twin 2002 Volvo Diesels.

there has been a significant reduction in sulfur content, results in less exhaust pollutants. diesel additives are typically to prevent bacteria/algae growth. so, no change there. check your manuals, you may be able to extend oil change intervals. i can on the d-6's.

I believe that any diesel owner should consider using a fuel additive. There are a variety of additives. Most have a cetane and lubricant improver some are also formulated to prevent fungus and also fuel gel problems in cold weather. With the changes in the fuel make up I believe it's important to address the loss of lubrication. You will find that most of the cost is made up by a increase in power due to the cetane improvement. Try it and you might be surprised by the power increase.

The fuel folks will tell you that there's no problem with the reduction of sulfur in the fuel but it's a major lubricant for the injectors and pumps. Newer engines have somewhat made up for the change to the 500ppm fuel that was being sold but the latest ultra low sulfur fuel I believe will be a different case.

Just as with the fuel changes oils are being re formulated to reduce phosphor. The latest series of engine oils are resulting in wear in cams in the ones that don't have roller tappets. They say that they have added mollibdum to make up for it but test results have shown that

I now add STP oil additive (blue color bottle) to every oil change, The red bottle increases the viscosity so I don't want that. It will bring the phosphor level back up to compensate for the reduction that has taken place. Most of the diesel oils still haven't been reformulated but it's starrting to happen.

Thanks much for the replies. You hear so many different opinions on fuel additives....it's hard to keep it all straight.
