  • 8/12-8/13-Wilmington to Lindenkohl Canyon

Not sure exactly where I am going yet but with variable winds Saturday night and Sunday, I'll be headed to the canyon middle of the day on Saturday for an overnighter. I think cooler water has moved into the Hudson and Toms. I'll be on channel 68. Anyone else heading out?

tried to go out saturday morning, left moriches inlet about 530. head toward the dip. it was blowing hard and steading 4-6 ft seas... decided not to take a beating and come home, not knowing if it was going to lay down... Had a great day of fluking though...

Left Fire Island @ 11 am for the Hudson. Lines in 2 miles south of the tip @ 2:30. Trolled till 7:30 with only 2 mahi in the box. Dropped my gear just north of the 100 square for the night. At 12:30 my sword rod set @ 220 ft starts screaming. Pick up the Penn 70, advance to strike & come tight on the fish. 28# strike drag, line is flying off, I put on a gimbal & harness & advance the drag to full (40#) & line is still flying off the reel, now down to about 1/4 spool I begin to put some hand pressure on the spool to stop this fish so we can drop the our ball & follow this monster!! Well the fish slowed down, & then stopped. I tried to begin to reel with no luck so I dropped her into low gear, About 10 turns in low and POP!! main line parts, fish is gone!! We are all depressed.

As I retrieve the line I come up with an end with a slight curl & clean break, my knot failed. I am usually very dilligent about my knots and if something doesn't seat properly I will cut it off & retie. That evening after trolling I remember cutting off the snap & tieing on the barrel swivel. I came tight on the knot & it did not seat well, I said to myself, the hell with it, it is 100# test it should be fine, well that is the first and last time that will happen.

We never did see the fish but it hit like a sword, pulled like a sword and was probably the biggest fish I will never catch!!

No other bites that night & next morning we did manage 1 LFT & 1 YFT.

NOAA screwed up again and the weather was not real nice and got worse on Sunday. The ride home, into a head sea really makes me appreciate our choice in rigs!! I call Sunday's weather Carolina weather!!

Good Luck, tight lines & taught knots!!

I meant to post yesterday but was too worn out. We had a nice ride out from Barnegat Inlet, NJ to the Spencer canyon Saturday afternoon. The water temp was 75 and blue. We trolled for two hours before dark marking tons of bait but only picked up one mahi by a pot. We decided to tie up to that pot since we were marking good bait and no one on the radio had found fish. Once dark, we immediately had sguid behind the boat all night. Two hours into the night without a touch, my buddy pulls in a 35 lb. yft and then all hell broke loose with the mahi. We boated 12 mahi (5-9 lbs.) in about 45 minutes. The bite stopped and the squid returned to suck our baits dry. Couldn't jig a single squid and forgot the net in the attic. No action the rest of the night.

Up on the troll in the morning for two hours we lost a White on a green machine behind a bird and had no other run-offs. From the sound of it on channel 68, other boats got skunked or managed a couple of fish from the Lindy to the Spencer. Only 6 boats in the Spencer all night.

It was a bit of a spanking due to the head sea on the way home but we managed 21 knots. No complaints. Pic attached.

                    Sunday day trip

Left Falmouth 4 AM Sunday; ran w/ a following north wind for 3 hr's to the 500 square about 20 miles NE of the Tails. Put in blue green water and went 0 for 2 on albies in the next hour. Next time I leader rather than a rookie . Made thr mistake of going south to blue 78 degree water a few miles N of the edge. Finbacks, lots of porpoises but no fish. Even the mahi's onthe pots were shy; they woul surf down sea after the lures and turn away.

I spun north at ~noon, saw the building N 10-15 and decided to run back up and hour to get out of the building seas and lessen the distance for the long run home.

Nothing trolling through the lanes; even a fencepost we found was bare.

                    I made 22-23 for the 1st 2 hr's and 24 the last 2 into the head seas.

143 gallons for me on a day trip
