  • Freshwater Tuna 8-4-07

Here's a shot of our catch from Saturday. Not the biggest salmon in the lake, but good enough for a lot of fun. That's me, third from the left. These salmon were caught trolling flashers/flies and spoons using a variety of methods; downriggers, dipsy divers, leadcore, stainless wire and copper wire.

Great report cap. Bet you those reels don't scream on those freshwater tuna.

Our tackle is scaled to our fish. We're running 20# mono line and 20# flourocarbon leaders on our wire & lead cores. Penn 320/330 sized reels (a few Penns, a lot of Diawas, and several Shimanos on my boat). While not in the same league as real tuna, a good king salmon can pull 100' off the reel in very short order, so the reels do sing a little.

These fish were caught on Lake Michigan about 6-8 nm off the port of Ludington fishing down 40-100' over 100-350 FOW.

On edit: The three largest fish in the picture (14#, 12#, 12#) took us first place in a mini tourney. A good king in my book is 18# and up. We've caught them to 24# on my old boat. For comparison, to recieve a State of Michigan Master Angler award it would take a weight of 27#. The state record is just over 46#. On 20# tackle that would be a hoot.

        Tight lines & screaming drags...

          Nice catch

My buddy goes nuts over those. He fishes Ontario in the SE corner. They are a blast if you match up the right tackle.

Ask CClassic28 about his alaska adventure. If you caught that many up there, you would be in jail for awhile.

              Good Job Little Dandy,

These Carolina boats work great catching freshwater fish. Congrats on you tourney win.

I'll be heading to the Huron Basin mid september for fall walleye. You getting in the Vermilion Hawgfest?

I haven't seen another CC all summer in the western basin.

                Lady Bridge,

We pull LD for the winter storage October 15. By that point we're into duck hunting anyway. So anything after that is a no-go for our boat (though I might be available for "rod count" on another boat if the opportunity presents itself).

There are a couple 28's slipped at the Ludington Municipal Marina. We had three 25's participating in our "Walleye Smackdown" at Toledo Beach in early June (Salmonhead, In the Net, and LD).

                  LD,

The Hawgfest is Sept 22. Details are found at www.vermilionhawgfest.com

As of now I have my 6 man team but I'll give you a shout if some one drops out . It is a fairly big tourney sponsored by WBSA and Ohio Game Fish.

I wish I could have attended the spring EA event and met some of the freshwater CC guys. Hopefully next spring.

Also, I'm now due for my oil change, I let you know how it goes.
