  • Larger Electronics ?

Was wondering If anyone has installed or tried to install any newer, larger diplay chartplotter units in their older 28's. If so do you have pictures. I have a 2001 28, with a northstar 952, in her, and was wondering how it would look with a bigger unit.

    6000i 8.4"

I am about to pull my 952 & install a Northstar 6000i 8.4" screen. When complete I will post a few pics of the retrofit.

            Looks Good

Did you have to do any extra cutting to make it fit? Just wondering what you did to modifiy it cause I'm thinking of the same thing.

              6000I Installation

With a close look at the pictures you will see that the unit is actually mounted on a piece of 1" black starboard. This piece has a sharp angle cut on the bottom edge of it to allow for a larger flat surface to mount the larger unit. The Northstar was mounted onto the starboard first with recessed areas on the back of the starboard to allow the mounting lug nuts to sit flush with the back of the starboard. Then the starboard with the unit attached was screwed to the dash from behind. This allows for easy removal of the unit during the off season. The existing hole in the dash where the 952 was needed to be enlarged slightly. The entire install took me about 2-1/2 hrs. What is real nice is that the 6000 plugs into all of the 952's connectors so no electrical work needed to be done. The only thing I did do was pull a new antenna cable.

So far so good with the new GPS, what a difference in resolution & size. And best of all, no learning curve, it functions exactly like the 952.

              Good Luck,

              Chris

Chris Looks Awesome, one ? though, Where did you get the starboard, and did you have to cut it to fit like that?
                Thanks

                  Nick,

I have been buying my starboard locally, but it is available @ West Marine & Boaters World.

There definately is cutting & routing needed but very managable if you are handy. If not, look up a local marine carpenter & he will be able to do it for you.

If you run into a bind, I can also make you the piece and drop it in the mail for you to install.

                      Scared to start Cutting!

I have a new Raymarine C70 system still sitting in the boxes cause I am terrified to start cutting my dash on my 99 CC25. I really want it dash mounted because I think this is the best spot for it, already have a gaping hole where the old display was, don't like it overhead, nor do I like the "pods". Anyone taken a cutting wheel to their dash to stuff a new display in on a 25? Can you reply with some suggestions and steady my shaking hand so I can begin cutting???

                      sleepless in NY.

                        Larger Electronics for 28

We had a 32 helm installed on our 28 to make room for new larger footprint electronics.

                        Added a few more pictures

I think that is the single best upgrade that I have see on that boat. I always wondered why Mac never made the console go all the way to the cabin entrance.

                            32 Dash

My 28 was in line behind Budman's and I also had the 32 dash installed. I'll post some picks of it, maybe by the weekend. It really looks good.

Is this something that he is doing now or is it a upgrade?
