I was hoping to get some input about what everyone thinks is the best way to protect the gel-coat, the newer polymer sealers or good old wax??

I want to hear what everyone has to say also. I was using a polymer on my last boat and worked well. Very easy to apply and seemed to last. Topside was getting a little dull but no chalking. The hull side were as good as new after 5 yrs.

I look at it this way, If it is easy to apply you will wax it. If it is hard to use. you won't. Anything is better than nothing.

Tom,
What product did you use? I was thinking about the StarBrite with Teflon.

It is actually a car wax. It's called POLY CAR COAT by RAGO products. I bought a case of it a few yrs ago. When it's gone I might look for something else. Then again maybe not.

Other guys said that COLINITE is very good so I tryed it. What a pain in the butt to put on. I did about 6 sq ft and gave up. I gave the can away.

For years I was using 3M products. 1st appliaction, cleaner wax, with a machine. Second application, staight wax, by hand. I was pleased with the performance.

Last year I changed to the Collinite system. The wax was very difficult to remove, but the boat did really shine. Also at year end water was still beading on the hull sides.

I have my topside done by a local detailer. I have the metal done once a month and the topside detailed 3 times a season. Let me tell you it is worth every penny!! I invest way too much time in the topside nooks and crannies.

Not real sure if I will go back to 3M this year or stick with Collinites.

Question, what are you guys painting you bottoms with? Anyone running a "Carolina Coat" ?

Here is a thread on another web site I follow that might also give some interesting options.

I used woodie wax this past weekend. This is the easiest wax I have ever used. You can wax the entire top of the boat including the tower in about 2 hrs and not break a sweat. This is after it is washed. I used spray 9 and soft scrub on the helm deck and cockpit to clean it good and then the wax.

We will see how well it holds up.

Tom,
I use the Woody Wax on all the metal parts, stainless and aluminum. For the fiberglass I ended up using Starbrite Polish with TEFLON and so far it looks great and is holding up well. Time will tell.
