Has anyone run into this problem? The temperature on my Fruno 585 started to jump around showing readings that were far off and after a short time stopped reading completely. I’m not sure if it’s the unit or the transducer. Is there an easy way to test it to find out what might be broken?

I have that unit and had that problem. I was actually getting a temp reading of high 90's! You can calibrate the unit to certain levels of accuracy but I was way outside the parameters. I took it in and had it bench tested and the display unit was fine. The transducer is 3 in one (speed, temp, and fathometer) and if the temp function goes.......you have to replace it. Mine was the transom mount and was only around $100. I replaced it myself (in the slip) and it requires getting wet and also snaking the cable from the inside of the transom around the gunnel and up into the electronic box. Not a lot of fun......but doable. Well worth it when offshore looking for temp breaks. Good Luck.

I've got the same problem with my thru hull and haven't gotten around to replacing yet. Just to be sure it is the transducer, you could hook up the new ducer to the unit before installing and drop it in the water.

My speed and temp sensor just went out it was reading *9.9. (1kw ducer through hull)I spoke with frununo tec he said they do go bad after 3-5 seasons. My boat is in the water had a guy come and remove it and install a new one.He said your gona hear some water comming in the boat but don't panick (yea right). I lucked out with a built in flapper valve. when the old one was removed the flapper closed and i did not get a shot glass of water come in the boat. This is a common problem with this type. People were complaining and frununo corrected the issue with a flapper valve. total cost $95.00 for speed & temp sensor plus a terminal hub for the rewire job. The guy charged me $245.00 for the install gave him a $60.00 tip. He also set the radar timed for me & checked out all electric conections. Money well spent total $400.00 (8:30 am to 11:45 am)

This is why they call it a B O A T.... Break Out Another Thousand $
