I'm about to pop for a Furuno 12" display and intend to mount it in the obvious open space on my helm.
Any words of wisdom on a flat surface mount there before I drop the 5K :)?

Hey Larry. That's where my Raymarine E120 is mounted (was already there when I bought the boat). So far, so good. The only thing I don't like is that I can't see it if I'm in the cockpit. Also, it appears that it is raised slightly off the fiberglass by a piece of starboard. Don't know if this was to address a clearance issue behind the console or to add strength. Again, was like that when I bought it.
Are you getting vx2 or NN3?

Here is a link to the pics of the C-120 I installed on my
CC 25. The frame was needed to help with the clearance below the unit and to tilt the unit some for better viewing.

going NN3 not as much for the features as the 800 X 600 versus 640 X 480.
Trying to do GPS/Chart+Fishfinder+Sirius in this go around and add radar in the following.

Where are your gauges? I mounted my garmin 12" above hung from the top.

BLACKMAN,
I FOUND VERY LITTLE CLEARANCE BEHIND MY CC25 DASH FOR FURUNO ELECTRONICS. I WOULD BE VERY CAUTIOUS. EVENTUALLY, WE REMOVED THE CENTER COMPASS AND GLASSED IN THE HOLE BEFORE MOUNTING A 10" FURUNO SCREEN WHICH WENT OVER THE CENTER LINE SLIGHTLY BUT WAS FINE BECAUSE WE ALLOWED FOR IT WHEN WE DID THE GLASS WORK. THEN IN THE FLAT CENTER, WE ANGLED AN 8" SCREEN BECAUSE THERE WAS INADEQUATE CLEARANCE (BENEATH) AND TO ENHANCE VISIBILITY FROM FROM FURTHER BACK IN THE COCKPIT (FISHING). WE USED TEAK WHICH WAS READILY AVAILABLE, EASY TO WORK WITH AND ADDED A FEW COATS OF GOOD VARNISH. IT ADDS A LITTLE WARMTH FROM THE STARK GLASS. IN TIME, IT WILL REQUIRE A LITTLE UPKEEP (RE-VARNISHING) WHICH WOULD BE ELIMINATED WITH THE BLACK PLASTIC. MY MAIN POINT BEING, HOWEVER, WATCH CAREFULLY THE LIMITED CLEARANCE AND DEFINITELY ANGLE YOUR SCREEN FOR BETTER VISIBILITY. IF YOU WOULD LIKE PICS, E-MAIL ME....WWW.TOM02W@AOL.COM.
GOOD LUCK.

I stole Capthorace's idea it works great with two 12"ers. Thanks Cap!

They don't block my view and I can see 'em great from the cockpit.

Ethan:
does that location allow you to night or fog navigate by radar w/ out a stiff neck?
My radar CRT is up in the upper box and drives me crazy over a couple hours.
My long term strategy here is to initially replace by Northstar 951 GPS this year w/ a 12" screen; leave the Furuno radar and fishfinder CRT's which still perform fine up above in the box; and eventually when one of the other goes take the remaining step, upgrade radar and FF to Navnet3 and replace those 2 CRT's with a single 8" screen up in the box.

Larry, No stiff neck here and I have a very bad back man;) All it takes is a slight glance upward every now and then to keep us on track. I love being able to view all my displays from the cockpit while fishing. With the 12"ers mounted above that is easily done.

Larry,
I have the 8.3" NN3 "flush mounted" in my 28 - and it is great - the 12" display would be nice - but don't overlook the smaller display.

We had our 12" screen mounted on black starboard at an angle on the center of the helm. It is easy to see while running no matter if you are standing or sitting. It is also easy to view from the cockpit when trolling. You can view the pictures of our electronics in the gallery under Reel Dreams.

Here are some pictures of the NN3D that I installed last year - made the box, glassed it and gel coated to match.
