2005 CC 28

Cummins 4BTA's, 260 hrs, Hy Torq 4 blade 17 x 21, Twin Disc MG 5011A transmissions, Battery charger, High water alarm, Hot Water, 200 gal fuel, ICOM VHF (upper & lower stations), 2 Raymarine E80 fishfinders, Raymarine GPS, Lewmar windlass, coaming pads, baitwell, Marlin tower, spreader lights

I am selling because of draft issue. Hurricane Dennis filled in channel and Flordia DEP will not allow re dredging. I am going to order another CC 28 with I/O so I can navigate the 24" shoal across bayou mouth.

Boat is in excellent shape. I have maintenance log.

$158,900.00

Are you sure you want a jackshaft boat? I'd suggest talking with a few jackshaft boat owners. It is a completely different experience than owning an inboard.

No, I don't really want the jackshaft, but with 24" of water it is either that or gas outboards ...

Actually, I love the boat I have, as is. It is perfect for the fishing I do here in the Gulf. We overnight from 50 to 80 nm out, doing swordfishing and tuna. But I have to catch the high tide (which here is just once a day) just right, and even then the props strike bottom quite often. If I plan on fishing the next day I have to anchor it overnight in the Bay and then take a kayak or pontoon boat out to it. Real pain in the patooee ...

It is just difficult for me to picture myself in anything other than a CC. But, for now anyway, the Flordia DEP just isn't going to budge on a dredging project so I have to come up with some other solution.

Any ideas?

I own a 95 28' 454 w/ Merc I/O Bought it for exactly the same reason. Shallow draft issues leading to my slip. Maintenance is more an issue than inboards. I have drives pulled yearly for service, bellows replacement every two years. More zincs to deal with. Motors have same maintenance issues. The I/O should be much faster though. Big speed difference.

otcutshine,

What is the minimum depth you can squeeze through? Most of the year it is at least 26" to 28" over the shoal, but sometimes 23" / 24". Also, Mercury or Volvo outdrives?

Will post pictures in the next day or so. Just need a break in the rain ...

They run very well, which is one reason I hate to sell it. This was the last year of mechanical. After this all the engines are electronic. The electronic engines have their advantages, but so do the mechanical. All you need is air and fuel and it will run, which can be a big deal when you fish as far offshore as I do.

I get right at 1 nm/ gal @ 2450 rpm. Cruise is about 22 / 23 knots with 3 big guys, 250 lbs of ice, tons of gear, 50 extra gal of diesel, baitwell full of water, etc.

I am about to talk myself out of selling it ...

Yeah,
I understand your wanting to be in a CC, but do your homework on the jackshaft set up. I had a jackshaft 28 and after that experience I think I might have been better off in a big outboard setup like a Regulator.

HeyDoc,

Give me some pointers. No one around here has ever had one.

Thanks.

Tom,

Try to PM "Missprint". He is out of Orange Beach and has a 32 but I believe his old 28 was a jackshaft version. I spoke with him a couple of times on the phone and he was very helpful to me.

The newer jackshaft designs have eliminated some of the propblems from the past. I have a Bravo 3 that has been relatively trouble free of 750 hours. Get the shaft seals checked regularly, that seems to have been other peoples big issue. Should the seals show signs of degradation repllacement lower housing will be needed. I beleive $1400.00 each. Thats if you catch it before water ingestion through the seal. I have ridden in inboard and I/O versions of the same boat. The J/S is faster. I will honestly tell you that in 2'-3' I cruise at 31 Knots burning 28/ hour. Sea direction will drop numbers slightly. Thats with acrb 454's. the newer gas are FI gas motors are claiming 20% efficiency and horsepower increases. I unfortunately am selling my rig hoping to have her sold by this spring. If you were so inclined you could buy mine, run her till the time was right and repower with diesels way cheaper than a new boat. I have looked at this option but it's way out of my league financially.

Is the boat still available? What numbers do you see with this boat? Cruise,WOT,Range.

Thanks

Yes, boat is still available.

I cruise at about 23/24 knots burning about 19 gal / hour, which is about 1.2 nm/gal.

However, I always have a problem with the nm/gal thing. In a strong head wind with 3 guys on board going about 19 knots (i.e. her stern is still digging) it is not that good. But on a good, flat day, the above is true.

She is very clean and ready to go fishing ...

Opps, forgot WOT = 3050; range = 200 gal x 1.2 nm = 240 nm or 276 sm.

Of course, you run out of fuel at 240 nm (so the true range is approximately 200 nm or 225 sm)...
