what are you wanting to set it up as, a DFA combo, or just a regular planer rod?

this is the set-up a good friend of mine perfected and it is the ticket for wahoo. last year during the Calcutta wahoo tournament we could not keep the deep swimming tuna off of this rig. it is easy to rig and easy to deploy and trip simply by freespooling you can trip the planer to check your bait.
i have come up with a smaller version that allows you to do the same with a number four or six or eight or even a twelve planer.
watch these videos on the original DFA that marty perfected. pay attention to the oversized eyes on the rod, they make a huge difference. the set-up seems like overkill in some ways but when trolling, 90% of our wahoo come off of this set-up. it is an absolute meatstick. i can give you the details on the lighter rig i have done if you are interested.

watch these videos and learn from a good friend of mine as he demonstrates the equipment, rigging and the use of a true planer rod. it is nicknamed DFA "Death From Above". it is an absolute meatstick as 90%of our wahoo come off this rod. i have details of a smaller version i have come up with for a lesser amount of money, but it will never go as deep as the 16,24,32 planers that we use on the DFA. can't find the original, i will have to pull it off the server i guess. be sure to check around this site for other awesome rigging tips and fishing tips that are out of this world. we have the best boats (Carolina Classic) here now let's make our fishing skills the best too.

Gofshn,
I'm also a member of SFC and have viewed Marty's vid several times.
Would love to see your smaller version of the "DFA" as I am also looking to get set up this way.
We had a good Hoo bite up here last yr and I want to try and target them a little more this yr.
Thanks,

Main difference being able to wind on the bridle and leader? I am getting the artform of tripping a planer from a rod almost down as long as the rod is spooled with spectra the no stretch of that stuff makes a HUGE difference in tripping a planer. Looking mainly for just a regular planer rod though.

I run my planers on 75' of 400# ljne looped over the stern cleat and coming out the scuppers. I then run a bait or lure down the downline by attaching it with snap swivel/rubber band combo.
Provided your rod tip can handle the width of the crimps the bridle approach looks pretty slick. What sort of rod is he using - home built?

I'll take Joe's number of you have it. I saw on SF were B's rods made them also and there was talk about turbo guides in lieu of roller guides.
This is all new to me so I'm trying to do it right the first time. Was going to go with a downrigger, but I really like the bridle.planner concept.
Thanks
Ed

yeah, bayrunners rods have been tested under use for about three years now on many charter boats, not sure about the others. joe makes an exceptional rod, one beautiful piece. he uses the SIC turbo guides and all other quality components such as Aftco.

planer rod update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have a friend in maryland who is now making the wind-on bridles chinese-handcuff style with 100# momoi diamond, and spectra/dacron for $20. they are set-up for an old-salty number 12 or 8 planer. you are able to use this rig as a planer rod in conjunction with a 50 wide reel spooled with 130 braid and a 50# class bent butt rod with rollers (and the bridle will go thru the rollers being all wind-on style and no crimps). this is a cost effective way of running a planer rod without investing the $1200 dollars for the 80w tiagra nad a custom ring guide rod. it won't go quite as deep, but it will work great. there are many less expensive short 50# class rods on e-bay for sale for around 100 bucks or so. my micro set-up uses an $170 okuma 50w. i also use the rig for grouper fishing when not using it as a planer rod.
email me for mikes contact info if interested. memphis_mullet@yahoo.com
